It was supposed to be an ordinary match between two great tennis players but it had a huge repercussion on social networks for other reasons. It happened during the second round of the Montreal Masters 1000 between the Australian Nick Kyrgios and the Roland Garros Champion Stan Wawrinka. Kyrgios made a disrespectful comment against his opponent and the ATP, after the whole impact of the media, was forced to punish the Australian player.

Kyrgios won the match when Wawrinka retired at 6-7 (8) 6-3 4-0 due to a back injury. But the microphones courtside picked up what the 20-year-old Australian said linking an Australian player to Swiss' apparent girlfriend: "Kokkinakis slept (it was not quite what he said) with your girlfriend". Kyrgios made a clear reference to fellow Thanasi Kokkinakis, which would have had an affair with Wawrinka's girlfriend, Croatian 19-year-old Donna Vekic. The video of the case circulated on the internet very fast, but gradually it was removed on the recommendation of ATP, because of copyright problems.

In interviews after the match, Kyrgios was justifying himself saying that his opponent provoked him. Also on social networks many players and tennis experts talked about the case, including Wawrinka. “What was said I wouldn't say to my worst enemy. To stop so low is not only unacceptable but also beyond belief. So disappointing to see a fellow athlete and colleague be so disrespectful in a way I could never even imagine. There is no need for this kind of behaviour on or off the court and I hope the governing body of this sport does not stand for this.''

However, on Thursday, Kyrgios apologized on his facebook.

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the comments I made during the match last night vs Stan Wawrinka. My comments were made in the heat of the moment and were unacceptable on many levels. In addition to the private apology I’ve made, I would like to make a public apology as well. I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what happened."

Also on Thursday, the ATP announced that Kyrgios will be fined in $ 10,000. The ATP is still analyzing this issue and new penalties can be applied.

Kyrgios is becoming famous for his high quality of tennis and also for not acting according with the rules and ethics of the sport.
